NJCDC Virtually Says 'Thank You' to Casino Night Sponsors
In a COVID-19 world, uncertainty seems to be rampant. Indeed, planning NJCDC's 2020 Casino Night was unpredictable—while the event was originally scheduled for March 20th, we moved it to June 5th, then August 27th, and then ultimately canceled it due to the pandemic. However, we couldn't let our final date of August 27th go by without thanking our supporters who asked us to keep their Casino Night donations so we can continue our work. To honor our event sponsors' and supporters' generosity during this challenging time, we held a short Zoom event.
Kicking off the event, NJCDC CEO Bob Guarasci said, 'We were very optimistic things would get better, but ultimately we decided to cancel the event due to our concern for our guests' health and well-being. We truly appreciate our event sponsors' and supporters' understanding of all of this, and for their generosity. Most Casino Night sponsors and supporters asked that we keep their donations so we can continue our work, and we are enormously grateful for that.'
Bob then thanked our Casino Night sponsors: Lakeland Bank, Brown& Brown of Lehigh Valley, Valley Bank, Reliable Benefits, TD Bank, Freedom Bank, and Spencer Savings Bank, as well as our supporters, who truly believe in the work that we do. Thanks to our donors, we managed to raise just shy of $17,000 through this year's Casino Night—less than usual but in this very different world those funds will help us. Each year, the money we raise through our Casino Night fundraiser supports our college-readiness programming for Paterson students, including out-of-state college tours, college fairs, scholarships, and more.

During the virtual event, we had the privilege of hearing success stories from three of our Paterson Youth Council alumni, who have seen their lives change through participating in this youth leadership development program, and through being part of the NJCDC family. Alysha Acosta, now a junior at Columbia University, reminisced about her time in the PYC, saying, ' I learned that all of us were somehow making a difference simply by speaking our minds and sharing our ideas...Because of my experiences during my time in the Paterson Youth Council and also the inspiring leaders who pushed me in this program and in high school, I was encouraged to apply to QuestBridge, a scholarship program that matches low-income students with full scholarships at prestigious universities...Without the Paterson Youth Council and NJCDC, I would not have seen myself as a leader in the community that could push herself to do better and better.' Alysha plans on finishing her undergraduate studies at Columbia and then attending law school, where she hopes to give back as a Human Rights lawyer.
Our attention then turned to Aamya Perez, who said, 'NJCDC has given me the opportunity to dream big. Has allowed me to switch up the narrative and be ahead of the game in my college applications because, let's face it, grades are not everything. I've gained hours of volunteering, involvement in local politics, $2,500 in college scholarships via NJCDC's Senior Sendoff Ceremony for Paterson students starting college, and most importantly the freedom to take initiative in my city as a teen'. Aamya is currently a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania, where she is studying nursing.
Lastly, the event attendees heard from Mohammed Uddin, who has been part of the NJCDC family for close to fifteen years. Mohammed started with NJCDC when he was three years old as a student at NJCDC's Paterson Family Center Preschool; he then went on to attend the Community Charter School of Paterson and was President of the Paterson Youth Council during the 2019-2020 school year. Mohammed said, 'During the quarantine, as the President of the Paterson Youth Council, I was able to successfully lead virtual forums on COVID and on civil unrest with my fellow PYC members. Together, we were able to reach the hearts of many Paterson residents and guide them towards several resources that NJCDC has to offer...Throughout my years with NJCDC—going on 15! —I truly grew as a person, leader, and role model for others—and I also became a much more confident public speaker—both in person and virtually! To this day, I still cannot put into words the amount of gratitude I have for NJCDC, and also for everyone who makes their work possible'. Mohammed just began his collegiate career at Rutgers, where he will study Biomedical Engineering. We couldn't be more proud!
Our virtual guests also watched short videos on NJCDC's college-readiness programming and COVID-19 response, as well as Governor Murphy's shout-out of our work distributing nearly 400 Chromebooks.
Although this year's Casino Night looked very different, virtual event attendees were able to hear first-hand how their support directly impacts individuals in the community, and learn more about NJCDC's work. NJCDC CEO Bob Guarasci said, 'We at NJCDC cannot put into words how truly grateful we are for those who support our organization, and we look forward to hosting Casino Night next year.'

Casino Night Flow
A unique and memorable party for all occasions, you cannot go wrong with a casino night party. But how does a casino event usually unfold?
- Guests Arrive!
- Gambling!
- Funny Money Specials
- Cash Out
- Prizes
As the guests arrive, they pick up their funny money and head out to the tables for a night of great fun.
Exciting and harmless gambling brings your guests together. Players are welcome to mingle, eat, and drink at the tables. They are also encouraged to learn something new!
Typically run at fundraisers, funny money specials encourage guests to dig deeper and donate. Although no money is allowed at a private party, there's nothing stopping you from doing something just as exciting.
We start slowly phasing tables out as we count everyone's winnings. We can give out raffle tickets (usual fundraiser choice) or keep a tally of biggest winners (usual private party choice).
Depending on your cash out choice, prizes will be awarded to either the highest winners or to those who won the raffle. And everyone walks away with great memories!
Behind the Tables
Our biggest pride and joy are the dealers we bring to your event. Everyone of them is professional, well-trained, and thrives on teaching new players the rules of the game! They will have non-gamblers playing Craps in no time flat.
